Biography of Dr.Mahamadu Bawumia

 Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is a prominent Ghanaian economist and politician, currently serving as the Vice President of Ghana. Born on October 7, 1963, in Tamale, Northern Region of Ghana, Bawumia has built a distinguished career in both academia and public service.



 Education

Dr. Bawumia's educational journey began at the Sakasaka Primary School in Tamale and continued at the Tamale Secondary School. He furthered his studies at the University of Buckingham in the United Kingdom, where he earned a First Class Honours Degree in Economics. He then pursued a Master's degree in Economics at Lincoln College, Oxford University, followed by a Ph.D. in Economics from Simon Fraser University in Canada.


 Professional Career

Before entering politics, Dr. Bawumia had a successful career in academia and the financial sector. He lectured in Monetary Economics and International Finance at Emile Woolf College of Accountancy in London and was a Senior Lecturer in Economics at the University of Ghana. Dr. Bawumia also served as an economist at the Research Department of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington, D.C.


 Political Career

Dr. Bawumia entered the political arena in 2008 when he was selected as the running mate to Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Although they were not successful in the 2008 and 2012 elections, their persistence paid off in 2016 when they won the presidential election, leading to Dr. Bawumia becoming the Vice President of Ghana on January 7, 2017. He was re-elected in 2020 and continues to serve in this role.


 Contributions and Achievements

As Vice President, Dr. Bawumia has been instrumental in several economic and digital transformation initiatives. He has championed policies aimed at stabilizing the Ghanaian economy, improving financial inclusion, and enhancing public sector efficiency through digitalization. Notable projects under his leadership include the implementation of the Mobile Money Interoperability system, the National Digital Property Addressing System, and the Ghana Card project, which aims to provide a unique identity for every citizen.


 Personal Life

Dr. Bawumia is married to Samira Bawumia, and they have four children. Samira Bawumia is also a prominent figure in Ghana, known for her advocacy work and contributions to social causes.


Dr. Bawumia's blend of academic prowess, economic expertise, and political acumen has made him a key figure in Ghana's development trajectory, earning him respect both domestically and internationally.
