Cocoa Smuggling Taskforce seizes 100 bags in old Akrade Operation.

A task force dedicated to curbing cocoa smuggling seized 100 bags of cocoa in an operation in Old Akrade, a town in the Eastern Region of Ghana. The operation, which was part of a broader effort to tackle the illegal trade of cocoa, disrupted a smuggling ring attempting to move large quantities of the commodity across borders.

Cocoa smuggling is a major issue in Ghana, one of the world's largest cocoa producers. Illegal trade not only threatens the livelihoods of legitimate farmers but also deprives the country of much-needed revenue. Smugglers often transport cocoa to neighboring countries where they can sell it at a higher price, especially during times when world market prices fluctuate.

The seizure in Old Akrade highlights the vigilance of the task force, which was established to safeguard Ghana’s cocoa sector. Acting on intelligence, the task force intercepted the consignment, which was allegedly bound for a smuggling route. The bags were found in trucks attempting to evade the authorities, and those involved were arrested for further investigation.

The government, in collaboration with law enforcement and cocoa-related bodies, has intensified its campaign against smuggling by increasing border patrols and educating farmers on the negative impact of these illegal activities. Authorities have emphasized that cocoa smuggling reduces the resources available to improve the cocoa industry, including infrastructure, farmer welfare, and sustainability initiatives.

This operation serves as a strong warning to smugglers, and the government continues to encourage the public to report suspicious activities to aid the fight against cocoa smuggling.
